Topic: Nuclear Deterrence in the Age of Drones
Ahead of a high-stakes summit with China’s Xi Jinping on October 30, President Trump called for the U.S. to resume nuclear weapons testing for the first time in 30 years. A day earlier, Russia announced it successfully tested a nuclear-powered, nuclear-capable underwater drone – claiming it cannot be intercepted and could trigger tsunamis. Meanwhile, NATO continues to push for more defense spending in response to Russia’s recent drone incursions into allied airspace.
As nuclear tensions heat up and nations scramble to build drone capabilities, are we entering a new arms race? Do these developments signal a new era of deterrence – or a threat to global security?
This is a no-homework event, but supplemental articles will be provided to attendees
