John Rutherford Allen assumed the presidency of the Brookings Institution in November 2017\, having most recently served as chair of security and strategy and a distinguished fellow in the Foreign Policy Program at Brookings. Allen is a retired U.S. Marine Corps four-star general and former commander of the NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and U.S. Forces in Afghanistan. \nAllen served in two senior diplomatic roles following his retirement from the Marine Corps. First\, for 15 months as senior advisor to the secretary of defense on Middle East Security\, during which he led the security dialogue for the Israeli/Palestinian peace process. President Barack Obama then appointed Allen as special presidential envoy to the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL\, a position he held for 15 months. Allen’s diplomatic efforts grew the coalition to 65 members\, effectively halting the expansion of ISIL. In recognition of this work\, he was presented the Department of State Distinguished Honor Award by Secretary John Kerry and the Director of National Intelligence Distinguished Public Service Award by Director James Clapper. \nDuring his nearly four-decade military career\, Allen served in a variety of command and staff positions in the Marine Corps and the Joint Force. He commanded 150\,000 U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan from July 2011 to February 2013. Allen is the first Marine to command a theater of war. During his tenure as ISAF commander\, he recovered the 33\,000 U.S. surge forces\, moved the Afghan National Security Forces into the lead for combat operations\, and pivoted NATO forces from being a conventional combat force into an advisory command. \nAllen’s first tour as a general officer was as the principal director of Asia-Pacific policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense\, a position he held for nearly three years. In this assignment\, he was involved extensively with policy initiatives involving China\, Taiwan\, Mongolia\, and Southeast Asia. Allen also participated in the Six Party Talks on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and played a major role in organizing the relief effort during the South Asian tsunami from 2004 to 2005. \nBeyond his operational and diplomatic credentials\, Allen has led professional military educational programs\, including as director of the Marine Infantry Officer Program and commanding officer of the Marine Corps Basic School. He twice served at the United States Naval Academy\, first as a military instructor\, where he was named instructor of the year in 1990\, and later as commandant of midshipmen; the first Marine Corps officer to hold this position. Allen was the Marine Corps fellow to the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the first Marine officer to serve as a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations\, where today he is a permanent member. \nAmong his other affiliations\, Allen is a senior fellow at the Merrill Center of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and a senior fellow at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. He is an “Ancien” of the NATO Defense College in Rome\, and a frequent lecturer there. Petraeus (New York) joined KKR in June 2013 and is Chairman of the KKR Global Institute. Prior to joining KKR\, Gen. Petraeus served over 37 years in the U.S. military\, culminating his career with six consecutive commands\, five of which were in combat\, including command of coalition forces during the Surge in Iraq\, command of U.S. Central Command\, and command of coalition forces in Afghanistan. Jacobson\n\nDr. Mark R. Jacobson has over twenty years of experience in the federal government\, international organizations\, and academia working on some of the most complex and politically sensitive national security issues facing the United States. He is a recognized expert on U.S. foreign policy and national security as well as the dynamics of international conflict and the use of military force and has served as a policymaker\, diplomat\, academic and member of the armed forces. Since November 2017 Jacobson has served as a senior policy advisor at Kasowitz Benson Torrres LLC where\, as a part of the Government Affairs and Strategic Counsel group\, he helps to advise on and resolve complex and politically sensitive issues for clients\, as well as representing clients before the U.S. government. \nAs a public servant Jacobson most recently held appointments as a Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Defense and Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy. Previously he served in Kabul\, Afghanistan as the Deputy NATO Representative and Director of International Affairs at the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and in these roles advised Generals David Petraeus and Stanley McChrystal on the international political dynamics of the mission. Earlier in his career Jacobson served at the Pentagon in multiple roles and was in his office on September 11\, 2001 when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the wing where he worked. On Capitol Hill\, Jacobson worked for Senator Carl Levin on the staff of the Senate Armed Services Committee where he participated in the inquiry into the treatment and interrogation of detainees in U.S. custody. A combat veteran\, his military service includes time as both an Army and Navy reservist including mobilizations to Bosnia in 1996 and to Afghanistan in 2006. \nIn addition to his current role at Amherst College\, Jacobson is a non-resident Senior Fellow at Salve Regina University’s Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy. He previously held roles as an Associate Teaching Professor at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University\, an adjunct at The George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs\, a Visiting Fellow at Ohio State’s Mershon Center\, and a Senior Transatlantic Fellow at The German Marshall Fund of the United States. His current research interests include propaganda and political warfare during the Cold War\, the intersection of military service and identity communities in the United States\, and the foreign policy of the Carter Administration. Jacobson serves on the advisory board of the Lepage Center for History in the Public Interest at Villanova University\, is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations and devotes his time to organizations that help train and prepare the next generation of global leaders. Bahn Meee serves delicious Vietnamese dishes from pho to bahn mi (and what meal is complete without a Vietnamese coffee or bubble tea?) in an inviting\, casual setting. Vietnamese food to me is just food\, but to many people it’s a special event when they go out to enjoy Vietnamese food. Vietnamese dishes are very colorful\, full of different flavors and textures\, and should be eaten freshly served because of the complexity of the condiments and veggies that enhance the dishes’ flavor. \nMost people know what Pho is\, but what about Bun Bo Hue? Or Bun Rieu? Or even a Banh Mi? I wanted to showcase that Vietnamese food isn’t just a single dish that we eat for breakfast but other dishes with differences and contrasts in flavor. I wanted to show people that Sweet Spicy Fish Sauce “nuoc mam” can make a rice dish so much better (and that it doesn’t actually smell like a nasty fermented fish). \nI didn’t just want to own a Vietnamese food truck but rather\, I wanted to understand everything in the process\, and adjust the flavor accordingly. And besides\, an added advantage to a food truck is that it’s mobile so I can reach a greater customer base more effectively. \nIn 2015\, I began watching my girlfriend’s mother and grandmother cook\, and learned the skills and tricks they used to make the best versions of some of my favorite Vietnamese dishes. The tastes of these dishes were distinct\, very flavorful and strong. I then came across Thuy from Little Viet Kitchen and said to myself “Wow\, her dishes look amazing.” From Thuy\, I realized that presentation is key. I also decided to take it one step further by learning how to garden because I wanted to personally grow the herbs and vegetables that I would need to for the dishes. \nEating Vietnamese dishes isn’t simple either. That’s because most of our dishes are noodles or some kind of rice with fish sauce. You can’t just throw everything together and eat it two hours later (trust me\, the taste will be off and the texture won’t be so good either). So\, I wanted to find a container that would allow me to make eating Vietnamese dishes simple for the average person looking for an easy lunch\, as well as be able to pack food to-go for the those customers who want to bring food home for their family or for dinner. After searching and trying out multiple different products\, I finally found the right packaging. \nAfter much trial and experimentation\, I have optimized my favorite Vietnamese dishes into meals that are not only simple and easy to enjoy now (or later) but are also true to the taste of the dish.
