Ford\, Ambassador (Ret.)\nAmbassador Robert Ford is a scholar at the Middle East Institute in Washington\, DC and a fellow Yale University’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs where he teaches about U.S. foreign policy and the Middle East. \nFord was the U.S. Ambassador to Syria from 2011 to 2014. For his defense of human rights in Syria he received the Profile in Courage award from the John F Kennedy Library in Boston in 2015. Ford also served as the Political Affairs Chief at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad 2004-2006 where he helped American efforts to facilitate establishment of a new\, permanent Iraqi government. He was Deputy Ambassador at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad 2008 – 2010 where he led a team that prepared the plans for the longer-term U.S. diplomatic presence in Iraq used by the Obama administration. He was the U.S. Ambassador in Algeria 2006 – 2008 where he strengthened bilateral cooperation in the rule of law and education sectors. He also served in Bahrain\, Cameroon\, Egypt\, Turkey and Washington. Before joining the diplomatic service he was a volunteer teacher with the Peace Corps in Morocco 1980 – 1982. \nFord speaks English\, Arabic and French and appears regularly in US\, European and Arabic media. He has published articles in the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, and Foreign Affairs among others and has given guest lectures at Harvard\, Princeton\, MIT\, UCLA\, Tufts\, Johns Hopkins and other schools in the U.S. and Canada. Ford was featured in the book The Ambassadors: America’s Diplomats on the Front Lines\, by Paul Richter\, recently released in late 2019. \n  \nEmma Sky\, Yale University\nEmma Sky is director of Yale’s Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program and a Senior Fellow at the Jackson Institute\, where she teaches Middle East politics. She is the author of the highly acclaimed The Unravelling: High Hopes and Missed Opportunities in Iraq (2015) and In a Time of Monsters: Travelling in a Middle East in Revolt (2019). \nSky served as advisor to the Commanding General of US Forces in Iraq from 2007-2010; as advisor to the Commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in 2006; as advisor to the US Security Co-ordinator for the Middle East Peace Process in 2005; and as Governorate Co-ordinator of Kirkuk for the Coalition Provisional Authority\, 2003-2004. Prior to that\, Sky worked in the Palestinian territories for a decade\, managing projects to develop Palestinian institutions; and to promote co-existence between Israelis and Palestinians. In addition\, Emma has provided technical assistance on poverty elimination\, human rights\, justice public administration reform\, security sector reform\, and conflict resolution in the Middle East\, South Asia and Africa. \nSky has published numerous articles including in The New York Times\, Foreign Affairs\, Foreign Policy\, Politico\, Atlantic\, Slate\, Survival\, Center for a New American Security\, US Institute of Peace\, the Guardian\, and the Journal of the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies. Countries are choosing sides\, protests are raging\, humanitarian health crises are piling up\, and there is no definitive end in sight. Join us and Dr. Alejandro Velasco\, a professor and historian of modern Latin America at NYU Gallatin\, as we explore what happened in Venezuela and what the future holds for the South American country. \n  \nFeaturing: \n \nAlejandro Velasco is a historian of modern Latin America whose research and teaching interests are in the areas of social movements\, urban culture and democratization. His book\, Barrio Rising: Urban Popular Politics and the Making of Modern Venezuela (University of California Press\, 2015)\, couples archival and ethnographic research to examine how residents of Venezuela’s largest public housing community pursued full citizenship during the heyday of Latin America’s once-model democracy. \nBefore joining the Gallatin faculty\, Professor Velasco taught at Hampshire College\, where he was a Five College Fellow\, and at Duke University. His teaching record includes interdisciplinary courses on contemporary Latin America\, including seminars on human rights\, cultural studies\, and urban social movements; historical methods courses on 20th-century revolutions; graduate history courses on urban political history and workshops with primary and secondary school educators. Professor Velasco’s research has won major funding support from the Social Science Research Council\, the American Historical Association\, the Ford Foundation\, and the Mellon Foundation\, among others\, and he has presented widely at both national and international conferences and symposia.

SUMMARY:Borders\, Fences & Defenses: A Global Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Space Limited! \nWith a national emergency declared over border protection\, this discussion offers insight into the history of borders. The central question is: what exactly is a border? \nSeemingly stable lines separating two countries or geographical areas\, borders have been contested throughout history and are frequently at the center of political conflict.  Attention will be given to the development of the nation-state\, migration\, and the tension between globalization and protectionism.  Borders that will be examined more carefully are: the Irish “backstop” within the context of the impending Brexit; the boundary between Israel and the Palestinian Territories; the Iron Curtain with\, as its epicenter\, the Berlin Wall; the 38th parallel north between South and North Korea; and of course the U.S. – Mexico border. A frequent border crosser\, he has studied in the Netherlands\, Germany\, Norway and the United States and holds a PhD in German Studies.  He joined the Trinity faculty in 1997 where he teaches German Studies and general humanities courses with an emphasis on 20th century literature and culture.  His research focuses on exile literature written during the Nazi era.  His most recent book is entitled\, Literary Exiles From Nazi Germany. Exemplarity and the Search for Meaning.  His current book project deals with the importance of borders and boundaries in the European literary imagination. More broadly\, he is exploring the new and richly interdisciplinary field of Environmental Humanities.

DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of CT held its very first Model United Nations program in 1952 and since then thousands of individuals across the state have benefitted from it. \nThe 2018 Model United Nations conference gives students the opportunity to engage in debate over a wide range of topics that revolve around the theme of climate change. This year’s program introduces a new committee: The Historical Committee on the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. . \nThe participants will also travel to the UN Missions in NYC on October 25 to be briefed by the countries they have chosen to represent. He began his career as an activist over ten years ago when he and a group of 6 other youth leaders gathered on the steps of Egypt’s Supreme Court\, calling for justice\, freedom and democracy\, in the first direct protest against the president in over 6 decades. This passion led him to play a key role in the Egyptian revolution of 2011\, which helped overthrow longtime dictator\, Hosni Mubarak. Following the 2011 revolution\, Esam worked with international leaders to push for a stable democracy in Egypt. During the Mohamed Morsi presidency\, Esam worked for U.S. Agency for International Development and later left the country after being sentenced in Egypt’s criminal court to two years in prison for his work for human rights and democratization in the Middle East. Esam then moved to Washington D.C. where he continued his work for human rights\, working for U.S. Institute for Peace. Having worked over the years with a number of Civil Society organizations (CSOs) in both the Middle East and the U.S.\, he has fostered close professional relationships with political leaders throughout the region\, and advised policy makers in the U.S. and European Union. He received his MA from Cairo University and has taught classes at Cairo University\, the American University in Cairo and Drake University. Esam brings a nuanced perspective to an understanding of Egyptian\, Middle Eastern\, and Islamic affairs that takes into account the concerns of stakeholders at various levels\, both in the Middle East and beyond its borders.\nEsam was honored for his defense of human rights in Egypt\, Middle East\, and the USA with several awards\, such as the Personality of the Year for fighting for human rights in the Middle East by the National Center for Human Rights. In 2013\, he was honored as a Freedom Fighter of the Year by the secretary of transportation Ray LaHood. Dr. Zhao has served in the Foreign Service of China for 22 years. He spent eight years in U.S. Affairs desk in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China. His first book\, Treacherous Alliance – The Secret Dealings of Israel\, Iran and the US (Yale University Press\, 2007) won the Grawemeyer award and Council of Foreign Relations Arthur Ross Award in 2008 (Silver medallion).\nHis second book\, A Single Roll of the Dice – Obama’s Diplomacy with Iran (Yale University Press\, 2012) was selected as The Best Book on The Middle East in 2012 by Foreign Affairs. His latest book – Losing an Enemy: Obama\, Iran and the Triumph of Diplomacy (Yale University Press\, 2017) – reveals the behind the scenes story to the historic nuclear deal with Iran. Under her leadership\, the legal policy on gender-based violence has been significantly improved\, including criminalization of domestic violence. Prior to this top civil service post\, she served as legal advisor to the president of Mongolia\, and has been involved in the judicial reform as well as abolishment of death penalty in Mongolia. She has extensive civil society experience and pioneered an array of initiatives to promote human rights and access to justice.\nStephenie Foster is a Partner in Smash Strategies and a former Senior Advisor and Counselor to the Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues at the U.S Department of State. As a member of the leadership team\, she coordinated\, managed and implemented a wide range of policies and programs\, including the women\, peace and security initiative\, women’s political participation and women’s economic empowerment. At the State Department\, Ms. Foster represented the United States in various multilateral and bilateral forums.
