SUMMARY:Cyberattack on Colonial Pipeline: DarkSide\, Ransomware\, and U.S. Critical Infrastructure Vulnerabilities
DESCRIPTION:Last week Colonial Pipeline\, which is responsible for about 45% of the East Coast fuel supply\, was hit with a crippling ransomware attack. The suspected culprit? DarkSide\, a group of hackers thought to have roots in Eastern Europe. \nAn attack of this scale on U.S. critical infrastructure is unprecedented. Unprecedented\, but not unexpected. \nCybersecurity experts have been ringing the alarm that a cyberattack of this kind was inevitable\, that U.S. critical infrastructure was particularly vulnerable\, and that the U.S. state and federal governments were unprepared to defend against imminent threats. \nWe’re joined by one of those very experts: Arthur House\, former Cybersecurity Risk Officer for the State of Connecticut\, Cybersecurity Policy Advisor to Connecticut’s Secretary of the State and Adjunct Professor at the University of Connecticut. \nBring your questions and join us to find out what happened during the Colonial Pipeline attack\, which adversaries continue to threaten U.S. infrastructure\, and what we can do about it. \n\n \n \n \n Slide 1RESERVE YOUR TICKETClick the button below to complete your registration. And she found the answer in Merkel’s political genius: in her willingness to talk with adversaries rather than over them\, her skill at negotiating without ever compromising on what’s most important to her\, her canniness in appointing political rivals to her cabinet and exacting their policies so they have no platform to run against her\, the humility to allow others to take credit for things done in tandem\, the wisdom to stay out of the papers and off Twitter\, and the vision to take advantage of crises to enact bold change. The Angela Merkel who emerges in The Chancellor is a role model for anyone interested in gaining and keeping power while holding onto one’s moral convictions—and for anyone looking to understand how to successfully bridge huge divisions within society.

SUMMARY:HOW CIVIL WARS START: Professor Barbara Walter in conversation with Megan Torrey of the World Affairs Council of CT
DESCRIPTION:The Mark Twain House & Museum and the World Affairs Council of CT welcome professor and political scientist Barbara Walter joined in conversation by CTWAC’s CEO Megan Torrey for a discussion of Professor Walter’s new book HOW CIVIL WARS START AND HOW TO STOP THEM. \nOver the last two decades\, the number of active civil wars around the world has almost doubled. Drawing on the latest international research and lessons from over twenty countries\, Walter identifies the crucial risk factors and reveals the warning signs – where wars tend to start\, who initiate them\, and what triggers them. \nA civil war today won’t look like America in the 1860s\, Spain in the 1930s\, or Russia in the 1920s. It will begin with sporadic acts of violence and terror\, accelerated by social media. It will sneak up on us and leave us wondering how we could have been so blind. \nHOW CIVIL WARS START Redefines civil war for a new age\, providing the framework we need to confront the danger we now face–and the knowledge to stop it before it’s too late. \nFREE virtual event\, although donations are gratefully accepted. Donations will be split evenly between The Mark Twain House & Museum and CTWAC. \n\n \n \n \n Slide 1RESERVE YOUR TICKETClick the button below to complete your registration. We look forward to seeing you there! \nREGISTER NOW \n \n \n \nAbout the Author: \nBarbara F. Walter\, Ph.D.\, is the Rohr Professor of International Affairs at the School of Global Policy & Strategy at the University of California\, San Diego and one of the world’s leading experts on civil wars\, political violence\, and terrorism. Her books include the award-winning Committing to Peace: Why Negotiations fail\, Reputation and Civil War\, and Civil Wars\, Insecurity\, and Intervention. \nWalter is a permanent member of the Council on Foreign Relations\, a frequent live guest on CNN\, and an active consultant for the World Bank\, the United Nations\, and the Departments of Defense and State.
