DESCRIPTION:CTWAC and the Connecticut Immigrant and Refugee Coalition (CIRC) are celebrating the 20th annual Immigrant Day. Join us in honoring the extraordinary accomplishments of Connecticut immigrants on May 2nd at the Connecticut State Capitol. \n  \nFeaturing Keynote Speaker:  \nRafael Perez-Escamilla\, M.S.\, Ph.D.\, Doctor Honoris Causa \nRafael Perez-Escamilla is a tenured Professor of Epidemiology & Public Health and Director of the Global Health Concentration and the Office of Public Health Practice at the Yale School of Public Health. His maternal-child nutrition research program has led to improvements in breastfeeding\, childhood obesity\, childhood anemia\, and household food security policies and programs in Connecticut\, the U.S. and globally. He has been a senior scientific advisor to UNICEF\, the World Health Organization\, FAO\, the World Bank\, and many more. \n  \nRefreshments provided\, featuring global cuisine from local Connecticut restaurants. \nEvent is free and open to the public. Through constant innovation and commitment to the environment\, United Technologies is setting the highest standards of sustainability in Connecticut and across the world. \nKeynote Speaker\nRobert Ballard\nRenowned Ocean Explorer and Scientist\nBest known for his 1985 discovery of the Titanic\, Dr. Robert Ballard has succeeded in tracking down numerous other significant shipwrecks\, including the German battleship Bismarck\, the lost fleet of Guadalcanal\, the U.S. aircraft carrier Yorktown (sunk in the World War II Battle of Midway)\, and John F. Kennedy’s boat\, PT-109.\nDr. Ballard is Founder and President of the Ocean Exploration Trust\, Explorer-In-Residence at the National Geographic Society\, and Commissioner for the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy. He served in the U.S. Navy for more than 30 years and continues to work with the Office of Naval Research. Suggested reading before the discussion: \nThe Burning Years\, Felicity Harley\nThe Great Derangement\, Amitav Ghosh \nFeaturing Felicity Harley\, former Executive Director of the World Affairs Council of Connecticut and now a full-time contemporary novelist and blogger. She will talk about why she was inspired to write a series of novels on climate change\, and how novels can be used to inform and inspire readers worldwide. The first in her series “Until This Last”\, The Burning Years\, was published by Double Dragon Publishing in February\, 2017. \nAlso featuring Ben Martin\, a local climate change activist and member of the Connecticut Chapter of 350.org.
